20Feb10

Currently practising material for my first gig with my "Chuter" project (March 17th at the Oakford Social Club in Reading). It's pretty much drone/ambient comprised of guitar loops (plus vox), but I'm keen to ensure that it doesn't just sound like music made for a loop pedal. I'd say I'm happy with how it's sounding so far. Fingers crossed people enjoy it on the night; I'm currently not sure who I'll be supporting, so hopefully it'll be someone at least mildly suitable. Please do come if you're nearby!

I should be playing some kind of acoustic set at Banksys in Charminster too (date unconfirmed). Although I've written a couple of acoustic numbers, it's not exactly a strength of mine - the whole process just feels a bit like cobbling together chords. I guess you've got the nack for the kind of thing or you don't. Nevermind...I've thought of a few nice covers I can play. I'll just put in the best performance I can and see what happens.

Listening to:

Skullflower - Strange Keys To Untune Gods' Firmament

I think it's a good double album. Bit of a relentless dynamic (full-out noise from start to finish), but it's a rewarding listen. Rather "cleansing" I guess.

Kyle Bobby Dunn - A Young Person's Guide To...
It's very Stars Of The Lid, this. Large open spaces, with pretty sounds gently drifting out to the far corners of the expanse. Another double disc - though this one's certainly less of an endurance test.

Goldmund - The Malady Of Elegance

Some very pretty piano from Keith Kenniff (Helios, Mint Julep). It's the intimacy of the recording that makes this record so fascinating - the squeak of the piano stool, the intermitent clatter of background activity. Not to mention the fact that the melodies are gorgeous.
